Check on a Mate
Spot the Signs
You know your mates. Sometimes the first sign that something isn't right is simply that they're not acting like themselves.
Things you might notice
- They stop turning up to the usual catch-ups or don't answer calls.
- They seem unusually angry, flat, worried or short-tempered.
- They're drinking more or taking more risks than usual.
- They mention not sleeping, feeling worn out or having no motivation.
- They talk as though they're a burden, hopeless or have nothing to look forward to.
- They've been through a tough time — a breakup, job loss, grief, illness or financial trouble.
One sign on its own doesn't tell you what's happening. But a change is a good reason to check in.
Try saying: “G'day mate, you haven't seemed yourself lately. Everything going all right?”
What next?
Find a quiet moment. Ask, listen and don't rush to fix things. If you're worried about their safety, ask directly whether they're thinking about suicide. Asking doesn't put the idea in their head.
If they're in immediate danger, stay with them if safe to do so and call 000. For confidential crisis support in Australia, call Lifeline on 13 11 14.
