Check on a Mate
Start a Conversation
Checking on a mate doesn't need a big speech. A quiet moment and a simple question can be enough.
Keep it natural
- Pick a time and place where you can talk without an audience.
- Say what you've noticed without judging them.
- Ask an open question, then give them time to answer.
- If they say they're fine but you're still concerned, let them know you're around and check again later.
Try: “Haven't seen much of you lately. How are you travelling?”
Or: “You don't seem your usual self. Want to have a yarn?”
What to avoid
Try not to say “cheer up”, “others have it worse” or “you'll be right”. You don't need to compare problems or have all the answers.
Keep the door open
Even if your mate isn't ready to talk, a call, a coffee or a follow-up message can show that you mean it.
