Check on a Mate
When a Mate Opens Up
When someone trusts you enough to tell you they're struggling, the most useful thing you can often do is listen.
What helps
- Put the phone away and give them your attention.
- Let them speak without interrupting or trying to solve everything.
- Thank them for telling you: “I'm glad you told me.”
- Ask what would help right now, rather than assuming.
- Offer to help them contact a GP or support service if they'd like that.
If you're worried about suicide
Ask clearly and calmly: “Are you thinking about suicide?” Take any answer seriously. If there is immediate danger, call 000 and stay with them if it's safe. Don't promise to keep a risk to their life secret.
Remember: You can be a mate without being a counsellor. You don't have to carry it all on your own.
